The Original – Denver

Having grown up here, I’ve seen changes upon changes upon, you guessed it, more changes. The brand spankin’ newness of parts of Downtown Denver is often a little suspect to me. I am old enough to remember when the area where Coors Field now stands was nothing but dino bones and warehouses and the Rockies played their first two seasons in the old Mile High Stadium. What Ballpark district?

As you likely know, a lot has happened since 1992.

Now, in the Year of our Lord 2021, enter McGregor Square, a new entertainment district adjacent to Coors Field – restaurants, bars, a hotel, and an old, familiar bookstore in a shiny new space. It’s where you can find the new Denver eatery, The Original. Harrison and I walked through the Square one day a few weeks ago and took a quick peek inside the windows because it was closed at the time. It was officially on the list of new places we needed to try as we rejoined society as fully vaccinated adults.

We planned a trip to The Original before catching our first Rockies game in about two years. (I’ve missed you, Chuck Nazty!) Walking in, you’ll see a classic but modern diner aesthetic, and the menu includes approachable and familiar comfort foods with a little bit of flair. And of course, great cocktails.

The appetizer menu has several options for the non-meat eaters out there, and they have an Impossible patty option for anyone craving a burger without the beef. Spaghetti with Impossible Meatballs? Yes, please!

I see you with that stamped ice cube. Also, those shoe string fries were really hitting the spot.
Grilled Cheese B.L.T. = G.C.B.L.T.

It’s a charming spot and a great place to enjoy dinner and drinks before a game or happy hour on the patio. I will absolutely make my way back for brunch- mostly for the Ginger Mimosas.

Our recommendations:

The Crispy Brussels are perfectly crispy and super tasty. You can get them for a cool $5 during their daily Happy Hour from 3-6pm.

Yes, I did take a bite before I took the pic. TYVM.

The Resting Spritz Face has a fun name and is obviously pretty to look at. It’s also delightful to sip on – sweet, but not too sweet – sure to be enjoyable by cocktail lovers of all kinds.

I mean…
